Gallery Volunteer training will help you develop the skills you need, and it is designed to accommodate busy schedules. Initial training includes eight fall sessions on evenings and weekends, followed by monthly learning sessions on select Saturday mornings.
We encourage any adult who is “art curious” to attend a Gallery Volunteer Information Session. At each session, the Museum’s staff will share a short presentation, followed by opportunities to ask questions and enjoy light refreshments. In summer 2022, Joslyn embarked upon a rebranding project with a three-fold objective: clarify and articulate the Museum&#8217;s brand strategy and architecture; design a new visual identity system that supports that strategy; and activate that system across all platforms. Our partner in this process is Pentagram, a multi-disciplinary, independently owned design studio with a portfolio spanning five decades, many industries, and clients of every size. Comprising designers hailing from around the globe, and led by Eddie Opara, the Pentagram team reimagined every aspect of The Joslyn&#8217;s brand—a process both tactical and aspirational—to create a foundation that will ground and guide the Museum for many years to come.
On May 8, The Joslyn is delighted to welcome Eddie Opara to Omaha for a lecture focusing on the development of the Museum&#8217;s new identity through the intentional crafting of type designs that fulfill not only their utilitarian purpose of facilitating communication, but also assimilate into a grander narrative. About Joslyn&#8217;s new identity system, Opara notes, &#8220;It is imbued with historical undertones, cultural symbolism and inclusivity, and an unparalleled artistic beauty that encompass a progressive and forward-thinking discourse.
Meet Eddie Opara 
Eddie Opara was born in London in 1972. He studied graphic design at the London College of Printing and Yale University. He began his career at ATG and Imaginary Forces and worked as senior designer–art director at 2Å~4 before establishing his own studio, The Map Office. He joined Pentagram’s New York office as partner in 2010. His projects have included the design of brand identity, publications, packaging, environments, exhibitions, interactive installations, websites, user interfaces, and software, with many of his projects ranging across multiple media and clients including lululemon; Samsung; Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; Nike; Grace Farms; the Menil Foundation; the Corcoran Group; Morgan Stanley; New York University; SHoP Architects; buroOS; Skidmore Owings &amp; Merrill (SOM); SANAA; and Princeton Architectural Press. His work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art and has appeared in publications such as Wired, Fast Company, Creative Review, Archis, Surface, and Graphis. Opara is also a senior critic at the Yale University School of Art and has recently authored a book, Color Works, published by Rockport. He was named one of Adweek&#8217;s Creative 100 in 2018, one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2012 and 2014, and was featured in EBONY magazine&#8217;s Power 100 list.

Omaha Summer Arts Festival

Join us at <a href="https://www.juneteenthjoyfest.com/">Juneteenth JoyFest,</a> an annual arts and culture festival created to support Black entrepreneurs and artists, provide space for communal healing, and build community on N. 24th St. This year&#8217;s theme is Year of Legacy, honoring the rich history of jazz and culture along N. 24th St., and familial ties that inspire generations to move forward. Stop by The Joslyn&#8217;s table in the afternoon to create a postcard with imagery inspired by Juneteenth, jazz, and black-out poetry. Live musical performances will continue throughout the evening.
Juneteenth JoyFest is held at 24th and Ohio Street. Attendees from all backgrounds are welcome; those outside the African diaspora and designated zip codes (68112, 68111, 68110) are kindly requested to consider a donation of $15-$25 for admission.

Life With Color Young Artist Exhibition Opening Weekend

On September 10, The Joslyn will open as a restored, expanded, and transformed institution, inside and out. Designed in collaboration with Snøhetta and Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture, the new 42,000-square-foot Rhonda &amp; Howard Hawks Pavilion is the centerpiece of a project that creates a new visitor experience of the Museum and its grounds. Join us for a lively conversation among Snøhetta design team members, moderated by The Joslyn’s executive director and CEO Jack Becker, that will illuminate a years-long design process and highlight some significant feats and finer details of the buildings and landscape to take in when visiting.
Michelle Delk is a Partner with Snøhetta based in New York City. She leads the Landscape Architecture practice in the Americas as a passionate advocate and designer of the public realm. Her work is evocative of a foundational premise shared with Snøhetta: to create places that enhance the positive relationships between people and their environments.
Aaron Dorf is a Director and Senior Architect at Snøhetta, leading projects including the National September 11 Museum Pavilion; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art expansion; Harvard HouseZero; and Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. He helps lead Snøhetta’s North American sustainability practice – promoting ultra-low energy use, zero emissions, and healthy materials.
Craig Dykers is a founder of the international design practice Snøhetta, establishing offices in Oslo, Norway; New York City; and several other studios globally since its inception in 1989. He has led many of Snøhetta’s prominent projects internationally, including the Alexandria Library in Egypt, the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, and Joslyn Art Museum’s expansion.

Design Discussion with Michelle Delk, Aaron Dorf, and Craig Dykers

In the installation Appliqué sur le terrain, Henry Payer views the cultural landscape of present-day Nebraska through the vibrant lens of Indigenous ribbonwork appliqué. This artform involves sewing layers of silk ribbons, cotton, wool, and glass beads to make regalia for special occasions. The distinctive symmetrical patterns reflect kinship, ecological knowledge, and oral histories of various Indigenous communities.
Inspired by The Joslyn’s collection of Karl Bodmer watercolors, Payer created eight appliqué collages that layer Missouri River landscapes, calico fabric, and texts about the colonization of the region. He hand-stitched the designs in the Ho-Chunk appliqué style, called zeenįba hirarucak. Each floral and geometric pattern references historical examples created by Umónhon, Ponca, Ho-Chunk, Pawnee, Ioway, and Otoe-Missouria women, honoring the legacy of artists whose names were not documented. As part of this collaborative project, contemporary artists have generously shared their appliqué stories and regalia.

Henry Payer: Appliqué sur le terrain

Presented in the Focus Gallery, Seven Art Movements offers a multi-sensory exploration of some of the world’s most famous works of art. The installation represents seven key artistic movements: the Renaissance, the Baroque, Neoclassicism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Art Nouveau, and Expressionism. Custom kinesthetic displays with tactile panels and touch-activated audio make visual knowledge accessible for blind and visually impaired communities and create an immersive experience for all visitors.
This installation was developed by Tactile Images in association with the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Getty Images, the National Federation of the Blind, and the Alliance for Inclusive Design and Experiences (AIDE).

A multi-sensory exploration of some of the world’s most famous works of art, this special installation invites all visitors to move beyond visual appreciation and to engage with subject matter, style, and technique through touch and sound. Tactile Images make visual knowledge accessible for blind and visually impaired communities.

Seven Art Movements

Working at the intersection of cinema, photography, and installation, Clément Cogitore examines ritual, collective memory, and notions of the sacred. Les Indes Galantes takes its title and music from a 1735 opera-ballet by French composer Jean-Philippe Rameau. The fourth and final section of the opera is inspired by a meeting in 1725 between six Native American tribal chiefs and King Louis XV, during which the chiefs performed several traditional dances. Cogitore pairs Rameau’s dramatic Baroque soundtrack with a style of dance born in Los Angeles in the early 1990s known as K.R.U.M.P. Spanning ages, races, and ethnicities, Cogitore’s dancers gather in a circle on a sparsely-lit stage to engage in a “battle,” a common K.R.U.M.P performance format. The filmmaker captures this scene from multiple vantage points—distant observer, audience member, performer—to immerse viewers in this tight-knit dance community.

Eva LeWitt approaches her sculptures and installations with a spirit of experimentation, curiosity, and play. Subtly intervening in a long tradition of abstraction, LeWitt builds upon the pared-down aesthetics of Minimalism and Conceptualism, while offering a rejoinder to art historical conventions about what media are deemed appropriate for fine art. Employing common, industrially-produced materials, such as mesh netting, silicone, and latex, LeWitt masterfully reimagines familiar things. Her whimsical, unexpected objects dismantle viewers’ presuppositions about how such materials can and should function. Responding to light and physical space, LeWitt transforms ceilings, corners, floors, and walls. Her exhibition in The Joslyn’s Riley Contemporary Artists Project Gallery alters how visitors perceive and navigate this space and upends their understanding of the built environment.

Eva LeWitt approaches her sculptures and installations with a spirit of experimentation, curiosity, and play. Her exhibition in The Joslyn’s Riley CAP Gallery will transform ceilings, corners, floors, and walls to upend visitors’ expectations of the space.

Hanging installations feature vertical tubes in various colors, including green, black, pink, brown, and blue, ending in pointed, bead-like tips. The artwork is displayed in a bright gallery with a polished floor.

Eva LeWitt

Ed Ruscha draws inspiration from familiar subjects, including roadside gas stations, consumer products, and commercial logos. Colloquial speech also fascinates him. Rhymes, puns, guttural sounds, and catchphrases are among his signature motifs. Transforming the seemingly mundane into the extraordinary, Ruscha offers a fresh perspective on American vernacular culture.
Born in Omaha in 1937, Ruscha grew up in Oklahoma City, where his family settled in 1941. He moved to Los Angeles in 1956 to study commercial art. After working as a graphic artist for a brief time, Ruscha expanded his practice to encompass drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and artist’s books.
Ed Ruscha: Paper includes drawings, prints, and photographs from the artist’s recent gift to the Museum. These works, produced over six decades, feature graphics, typefaces, and letterforms rendered in ink, acrylic, pencil, pastel, and gunpowder on paper. A celebration of the artist’s wry use of image and text, this exhibition also highlights his experimentation with diverse media and techniques.

A celebration of Ed Ruscha’s wry use of text and image and his inventive approach to media and technique, this inaugural exhibition in the Museum’s first dedicated gallery for works on paper features drawings, prints, and photographs from the artist’s recent gift to the Museum.

Join us to celebrate and learn about a community partnership that became an art installation on view at The Joslyn. The program will begin with a conversation that includes artist Henry Payer Jr., Tami Buffalohead and Valery Killscrow Copeland with the Healing Ribbons organization, and from the museum&#8212;Annika K. Johnson, PhD, Stacy and Bruce Simon curator of Native American art and Ingrid Cho, curatorial assistant, Native American art. They will share details and insights about how they all worked together to highlight the Indigenous artform of ribbonwork appliqué in the installation Appliqué sur le terrain.  After the conversation, members of Healing Ribbons will model wearing blankets and other regalia inspired by the collaboration, sharing stories about their vibrant culture and traditions. A reception will follow.
About Our Partners 
Healing Ribbons began when several intergenerational Indigenous women came together to sew and create to honor and remember loved ones and heal from historical trauma. From there, it grew to become an organization that promotes holistic well-being, healing, positive cultural identity, and cultural revitalization.
About the Artist 
Henry Payer Jr. is a Ho-Chunk artist who works mainly with collage and mixed media. Payer received a BFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM in 2008. He studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, obtaining an MFA in 2013. In addition to his work being shown in multiple galleries and museums, he was awarded a Joan Mitchell Fellowship in 2022. At the Joslyn Art Museum, his installation Appliqué sur le terrain is on view in the American Galleries (Joslyn Building).

A free writing workshop offered by Opera Omaha and Nebraska Writers Collective as part of their Poetry &amp; Music Project will take place in The Joslyn&#8217;s Community Room. The workshop is recommended for youth in middle and high school (grades 4–12).

Facilitated by Nebraska Writers Collective Teaching Artists, this workshop will help you understand the connection between poems and songs, and focus on adding musicality to your writing. The workshop covers a variety of poetical devices such as alliteration, assonance, consonance, anaphora and others and shows how these devices make a piece of writing more sonically pleasing.  
The workshop will add an additional layer of understanding for those who are interested in participating in the Poetry &amp; Music Project.  
About the Poetry &amp; Music Project 
The Opera Omaha Poetry &amp; Music Project is a statewide program run in partnership with the Nebraska Writers Collective. Now in its eighth year, the Poetry &amp; Music Project connects student writers and their words with composers to create original scores and explore the connections between poetry and music. Students are invited to submit poems on the project, and free Poetry &amp; Music writing workshops are available in the fall. Professional composers select poems that move them from a robust collection of writing submitted by young writers in grades K-12 and create original music inspired by the selected poems. This program culminates in public performance of the selected poems—now songs—with the poets, their families, and community partners in attendance so they can see the fruits of labor that come from this season long project.

Drawing inspiration from contemporary art in the galleries, this class will introduce acrylic and mixed media painting methods, such as incorporating fabric, found objects, and symbols into a composition to create surface texture and complexity. This visual arts program introduces students to The Joslyn’s collections and exhibitions with instruction in six media: drawing, painting, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, and fiber arts. Students explore each medium, while building art skills and concepts at age-appropriate levels. Joslyn Art School’s museum setting provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to encounter original works of art, experiment in related art media, and learn from a professional staff committed to providing individual challenges and guidance.

Snøhetta Landscapes: Curiosity and the Unseen
Guest speaker Michelle Delk, Partner at Snøhetta New York
The landscape is vast, winding and weaving around us, layered with stories waiting to be uncovered. Michelle Delk approaches her work with Snøhetta through a lens of curiosity, taking time to truly see and appreciate the unique qualities of each place. She will share how she seeks to adapt and reimagine existing landscapes by highlighting their unrealized potentials. She believes that every space has its own voice, and her role is to listen closely, fostering a dialogue between what is and what could be. By weaving together diverse threads, she aims to create environments that resonate with both the past and the future, inviting people to connect with the land and with each other.

2024 Lecture Luncheon by The Joslyn Association

Fall Semester: Weeks of September 30–December 16 
Grades 1–4: Wednesdays, 4:30–6 pm
(No class the weeks of Oct 28 and Nov 25. Spring Semester: Weeks of Jan 6–Apr 7.) 
Joslyn Members: $204 per semester; General Public: $240 per semester
This visual arts program introduces students to The Joslyn’s collections and exhibitions with instruction in six media: drawing, painting, pottery, printmaking, sculpture, and fiber arts. Students explore each medium, while building art skills and concepts at age-appropriate levels. Joslyn Art School’s museum setting provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for students to encounter original works of art, experiment in related art media, and learn from a professional staff committed to providing individual challenges and guidance.
